Dryer Vent Cleaning FAQ — Jacksonville, FL

Common questions from homeowners in Jacksonville and the surrounding area. If your question isn't here, call us and we'll give you a straight answer.

How often does a dryer vent in Jacksonville actually need to be cleared?

Once a year is the honest baseline for most households here. Humidity is the reason. With dew points sitting in the 70s from May through September, the air your dryer pushes out doesn't dry the lint on the way through, so it packs onto the duct wall damp and sticks instead of blowing clear. If you run a big family's laundry, dry pet bedding, or your vent run is long, six to nine months is more realistic.

Which symptoms point to a plugged vent?

Clothes coming out warm but still damp after a full cycle is the first one people notice. Then the laundry room starts holding heat and smelling like hot lint, the dryer cabinet gets hot to the touch, and the cycle time creeps up until you're running everything twice. Go outside and check the hood while the dryer runs. Weak airflow or a flap that barely lifts means the air isn't getting out. A burnt smell means stop using it and call.

Walk me through the job from the time you arrive.

We look at the whole run first: where the dryer sits, how the duct leaves the wall, and where it terminates outside. Then we pull the dryer out, disconnect the transition hose, and run a rotating brush on a flexible rod through the line while a vacuum captures what comes loose. We work from both ends when the run allows it, clear the exterior hood and the flapper, then reconnect everything, seal the joints with foil tape, and run the dryer to confirm airflow at the outside termination. We show you what came out before we haul it off.

How long will I be without my laundry room?

Plan on under an hour for a typical single-story job, like the concrete-block ranches across the Southside, Arlington and the Westside where the dryer sits on an exterior wall and the run is short. Two-story subdivision homes in Mandarin with the laundry upstairs and a vertical run to the roof take longer, usually an hour and a half. Older frame bungalows in Riverside, Springfield and Murray Hill are unpredictable because the ducting has often been rerouted over the decades. Heavy packed lint or a nest adds time.

What moves the number up or down on a dryer vent job?

Length and shape of the run do most of it. A straight six-foot shot through a block wall is a different job than a thirty-foot line with three elbows climbing to a roof cap. Roof terminations mean ladder work and more time. Beyond that: whether the duct is crushed flexible foil that has to be replaced rather than brushed, whether we're removing a nest, and whether a hood or damper is broken and needs swapping. We look at the run, tell you what we see, and give you the number before anything gets touched.

How do I know the machine isn't the real problem?

Simple test: disconnect the duct from the back of the dryer and run a short cycle venting into the room. If the exhaust blows out strong and hot, the dryer is fine and the duct is the restriction. If it's weak with the duct off, you're looking at a failing blower wheel, a bad heating element, or a thermal fuse that tripped from past overheating. We tell you which one it is instead of cleaning a vent that was never the issue. Thermal fuses often blow because of a clogged vent, so it can be both.

Rigid metal duct or flexible. Is there a real difference?

Yes, and it shows up fast in this climate. Rigid smooth-wall metal has a slick interior, so damp lint has less to grab. Flexible foil and vinyl have ridges that trap it, and they sag and kink behind the dryer where nobody looks. Vinyl should come out entirely. We replace bad transition hose with rigid or semi-rigid metal and straighten the run where the space allows, which cuts how fast it loads up again.

There's something living in my vent. Can you handle that?

Often, yes. Birds nest in dryer hoods constantly around here, especially where a broken flapper leaves the opening wide, and the heavy pine and oak canopy means plenty of nesting material and plenty of squirrels and rodents looking for a warm cavity. We remove the nest and debris, clear the duct behind it, and install a proper hood with a working damper and a pest guard that still lets lint pass. If an animal is alive and lodged in the line, that's a wildlife removal call first and we'll tell you straight.

My duct run is too long. Can it be shortened or helped along?

Sometimes. The first thing we check is whether elbows can be removed or the path straightened, because every bend costs you the same as several feet of straight pipe. In two-story Mandarin and Southside builds with interior laundry rooms, rerouting to a closer exterior wall is occasionally possible depending on what's in the wall and attic. Where rerouting isn't realistic, an inline booster fan sized to the run is an option, though it needs its own cleaning schedule. We tell you which of those fits your house before you spend anything.

Do you come out the same day, and where do you go?

Same-day slots are usually open, and a dryer that's running hot gets priority over a routine cleaning. We cover Jacksonville broadly, which is a lot of ground given it's the largest city by land area in the continental US. Riverside, Springfield, Murray Hill, the Southside, Arlington, the Westside, Mandarin, Northside, and the newer construction on the far south and west edges. The beaches are included, where salt air tends to chew up exterior hoods early. After a tropical storm we get backed up, so call sooner rather than later.
